Hi! I’m Fee,
I am an Australian, born in Melbourne. Recently moved to Bordeaux, France from London, UK. Where I had been living for the past 1.5years. As you can tell, I can’t sit still for very long. I find it very hard to stay in one place when there is so much to see and experience in this beautiful world we live in.
Since I can remember I have felt a connection towards animals and have always found them incredibly fascinating. I knew somehow, someday I would have a career working alongside animals, helping to care and advocate for them. Harder said than done!
After finishing my degree, one which I struggled to complete (read more here), I needed to travel and get my hands dirty. I found a wonderful rehabilitation project for gibbons which truly changed my life and allowed me to focus more clearly the path I wanted to take in life.
Unfortunately, life wasn’t meant to be easy and animal jobs are very hard to come by. I received my fair share of knockbacks, year after year. Either I was too young, over experienced, or not experienced enough. I could never win. This was devastating for me because it didn’t seem to matter that I had a degree and hands-on experience, nothing seemed to be enough. But I didn’t let this stop me. I wanted to help care and create awareness for animals around the world and I was determined to make this happen.
The best way I could do this was by volunteering during my free time, to show my commitment and dedication. I volunteered on weekends or days off at wildlife shelters, veterinary clinics, zoological parks, and dog/cat shelters. I enrolled in short courses to learn more about domestic/exotic wildlife and dog behaviour. All while keeping whatever job I could, to make the money I needed to travel overseas. So that I could volunteer at exotic wildlife shelters/sanctuaries in different countries in need of further support.
Had I have known the setbacks and struggles I would have to face to get to where I am today, I’m not sure I would have persevered, but I am so glad I did. Although I am not yet where I want to be, the journey has been immensely rewarding and educational. Over the years I have met many people both young and old interested in my experiences volunteering with animals. Which is why I started this blog.
My hope is to encourage you to travel with knowledge, ensuring you do not take part in unethical animal practices. Such as taking photos with gibbons, riding elephants, or supporting charities that do not have the animals best interest in mind. I aim to write about my experiences at different charities that I have been to in Thailand, Texas, Cameroon, Belize, and Greece. To inspire and hopefully encourage you to volunteer with animals on your next travel adventure. I know how hard it is to find the right animal charity to support. I will give you helpful tips and advice about choosing a charity suitable for you and your skills. As well as create awareness of the different issues certain species are facing around the world.
If you love traveling and also adore animals, well, you’ve come to the right place!
